If you’re looking for an underrated travel destination in Portugal, look no further than São Miguel in the Azores. This island is a hidden paradise of volcanic landscapes, stunning beaches, and lush botanical gardens.

Relax on the Volcanic Beaches of Ribeira Grande

Ribeira Grande is a laid-back surf town just 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada, the island’s main city. Why visit?

  • Volcanic black sand beaches – A unique sight you won’t find just anywhere.

  • Top surfing destination – Even if you don’t surf, watching the pros is amazing.

  • Local Market (Mercado Municipal) – A hidden food hall with 10+ vendors offering diverse eats. Perfect for trying different dishes without breaking the bank.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed day, grab a drink, find a good spot on the beach, and just soak in the views.

Sete Cidades – The Most Epic View on the Island

This is hands-down one of the most stunning viewpoints in Portugal. Sete Cidades offers a legendary view of twin lakes—one bright blue, the other green. The lakes are said to have been formed from the tears of two lovers, separated by fate.

  • Best time to visit: Go on a clear day—fog can completely cover the lakes.

  • Bonus adventure: Right across from the viewpoint is an abandoned hotel with eerie vibes and insane panoramic views. If you’re feeling adventurous, climb to the top (but wear good shoes—it’s wet and slippery inside!)

FYI: When I visited, the viewpoint bathrooms were out of order, so plan ahead!

Explore a Secret Garden at Jardim Botanico Antonio Borges

After Sete Cidades, take a peaceful detour to Jardim Botanico Antonio Borges. It’s a lush, free-entry botanical garden in Ponta Delgada, filled with:

  • Hidden caves and unique rock formations.

  • Exotic plants from the 1800s.

  • Quiet spots for a picnic.

  • A small café inside the gardens, perfect for a coffee break.

This garden feels like stepping into a fairytale—and best of all, it’s completely free!

Soak in the Caldeira Velha Hot Springs

Imagine soaking in natural hot springs surrounded by palm trees and jungle vibes—that’s exactly what Caldeira Velha offers.

What to expect:

  • 4 geothermal pools at different temperatures.

  • A natural waterfall (the coldest pool, but stunning for photos!)

  • Boiling sulfur springs—you can’t enter these, but they show the island’s volcanic power.

Important Info:

  • Reservation required – Book your time slot in advance.

  • Entry fee applies – But 100% worth it for this tropical oasis.

Best Time to Go: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and get the best lighting.

Discover Ponta Delgada’s Secret Waterfront Nightlife

Ponta Delgada has a hidden nightlife scene that many tourists miss. Just across from the main square, a road leads you down to the water, where you’ll find:

  • Chilling hangout spots, bars, arcades, and a nightclub, right on the ocean.

  • Laid-back local vibes (my friend I went with even ended up playing foosball with some local kids!)

It’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring before heading back to your stay.

Final Thoughts: Is Sao Miguel Worth It?

1000% YES. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path island adventure, Sao Miguel is a must-see.

Quick Travel Tips:

  • Rent a car – Public transport is limited, and destinations are spread out.

  • Ask locals for recommendations – Some of the best spots aren’t on Google Maps and everyone there was so welcoming!

  • Plan your days wisely and according to the weather. Fog, rain, and road closures can change your plans.
