After visiting, I can confidently say this might be my favorite place I’ve ever traveled to. From hot springs to abandoned hotels with epic views, here’s a guide to the top must-see places on this breathtaking island.
Relax on the Volcanic Beaches of Ribeira Grande
Ribeira Grande is a laid-back surf town just 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada, the island’s main city. Why visit?
Volcanic black sand beaches – A unique sight you won’t find just anywhere.
Top surfing destination – Even if you don’t surf, watching the pros is amazing.
Local Market (Mercado Municipal) – A hidden food hall with 10+ vendors offering diverse eats. Perfect for trying different dishes without breaking the bank.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed day, grab a drink, find a good spot on the beach, and just soak in the views.
Sete Cidades – The Most Epic View on the Island
This is hands-down one of the most stunning viewpoints in Portugal. Sete Cidades offers a legendary view of twin lakes—one bright blue, the other green. The lakes are said to have been formed from the tears of two lovers, separated by fate.
Best time to visit: Go on a clear day—fog can completely cover the lakes.
Bonus adventure: Right across from the viewpoint is an abandoned hotel with eerie vibes and insane panoramic views. If you’re feeling adventurous, climb to the top (but wear good shoes—it’s wet and slippery inside!)
FYI: When I visited, the viewpoint bathrooms were out of order, so plan ahead!

What to expect:
4 geothermal pools at different temperatures.
A natural waterfall (the coldest pool, but stunning for photos!)
Boiling sulfur springs—you can’t enter these, but they show the island’s volcanic power.

Laid-back local vibes (my friend I went with even ended up playing foosball with some local kids!)
It’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring before heading back to your stay.

1000% YES. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path island adventure, Sao Miguel is a must-see.
